Burning or itching when trying to use the bathroom can be uncomfortable, painful and confusing. You might wonder how could this happen? A urinary tract infection, often referred to as a UTI, is an infection of the urinary tract commonly caused by bacteria that is spread through improper bathroom hygiene or through sexual contact. Most urinary tract infections involve the lower urinary tract, which is made up of the bladder and urethra.

Symptoms of a UTI can include:

· Burning sensation while urinating

· Lower back pain

· Itching sensation around the urethra

· Urinating more frequently

· Cloudy/bloody urine

· Foul smelling urine

Risk factors for a UTI can include being a female, a history of diabetes, sexual activity, older age, kidney problems. Most females will experience a UTI at one time in their life. Providers at Stanton Family Care are trained to help recognize the signs and symptoms of a UTI and prescribe appropriate antibiotics to bring relief to these patients.

UTIs that are left untreated can escalate to other serious problems, including an infection of the kidneys or prostate, confusion, pregnancy complications and sepsis.

It is important to be able to recognize the symptoms of an UTI and to see a provider at our Urgent Care to seek action for this infection.

Patients can also learn how to prevent UTIs from occurring in the future. Recurrent UTIs can also lead to more severe complications, and it is important to follow these steps to avoid another infection.

· Drink plenty of fluids and remain well-hydrated, unless your provider has purposefully restricted your fluids

· Wipe from front to back to avoid contaminating the urethra with bacteria from the digestive tract

· Try to urinate as soon as possible after intercourse

· Avoid holding your bladder and use the bathroom as you feel the urge

By following these steps and reading this information, the providers at Stanton Family Clinic are confident that patients will be able to understand more about UTIs and talk to their provider if they have further questions or require any assistance.
